Rain Relieves Stress on Soybeans in Parana, Brazil

Author: Michael Cordonnier/Soybean & Corn Advisor, Inc.

Recent rains in the state if Parana in southern Brazil have farmers more optimistic concerning their 2024/25 soybean crop. After rapid planting during the month of September, part of the state went through three weeks in November without rainfall. The dry period ended last week with heavy rainfall and the state continues to receive more rain.

The prior dry weather may result in lower yields of the earliest planted soybeans that were setting pods during that period. Despite that, most of the soybeans have promising conditions benefiting from moisture at a critical time in the crop development.

According to the Department of Rural Economics (Deral), the soybeans in the state are 100% planted and 34% in vegetative development, 33% flowering, 27% filling pods, and 6% maturing. The soybeans are rated 0% poor, 8% average, and 92% good.

The soybean harvest in Parana should start during the second half of January allowing ample time for farmers to plant a second crop of corn within the ideal planting window. Recent improvement in corn prices is expected to stimulate farmers to increase their safrinha corn acreage.
